Why Are European Formulas Better?

That may be due to formulas from Europe being perceived to have higher quality because they supposedly follow stricter EU (European Union) organic standards. (1) Many parents may prefer European brands due to options that are rarely available in American formulas, including milk from pasture-raised cows. (1) Still, baby formulas are among the most tightly regulated foods by the FDA. But no matter where the product is made, Brain Health from Birth author Rebecca Fett recommends choosing a formula with these top ingredients: (2)

Whey proteins or partially hydrolyzed whey Lactose (primary carbohydrate) Prebiotics, which may support a healthy gut microbiome (3) MFGM (milk fat globule membrane), a fat abundant in breast milk that may help support your baby’s cognitive development (4)

Fett explained that these are the main components of breast milk. So, it makes sense that you pick a formula with these ingredients unless your child is lactose intolerant or has special nutrition needs. (5) So, do HiPP organic formulas meet these criteria? Are they a good choice for your baby? What options are available, and which should you pick for your little one? Learn more below.

HiPP Formulas: Main Similarities & Differences

Is HiPP Formula Really Better?

Many HiPP formulas have “combiotic” or “combiotik” in their names. The brand coined these terms to indicate that their formulas are made of a combination of probioticsand prebiotics. All formulas are free from GMOs (genetically modified organisms) that may cause allergies, autism, ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), autoimmunity, and growth failure. (6) Is HiPP organic really organic? The company only sources its formulas from farms that strictly follow EU (European Union) organic farming guidelines. The formulas are made from the milk of grass-fed cows. All HiPP ingredients may be free from pesticides, steroids, hormones, and toxic chemicals. Unlike US formulas, the products by HiPP and other European brands may be free from synthetic vitamins and minerals. All formulations also have vitamin D and calcium to support bone and joint health. (7) The formulas contain vitamins A and C that may boost your little one’s immune system function. (7) The products contain omega-3 DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and omega-6 ARA (arachidonic acid) long-chain, polyunsaturated fatty acids. They can help promote brain development. (8) All formulas are free from gluten, peanuts, soy, eggs, starch, and added sugar. These items have palm oil, which can affect calcium absorption and lead to a lower bone density in your baby. (9) Most HiPP formulas were included in a massive recall of formulas made in Europe by Able Groupe. (10)

Why Is HiPP Not FDA Approved?

Last August 8, 2021, recalled several baby formulas from European brands HiPP, Holle, Kendamil, and Bioland. (10) The recall is due to these brands failing to meet FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) requirements. Many also have low iron content but failed to put proper labels indicating the possible need for iron supplements. (10) According to the recall announcement, the FDA hasn’t received the premarket notifications for any products. Such is required before any formula can be sold in the US. (10) Also, several formulas from these European brands don’t meet the FDA’s minimum iron standard and labeling requirements. (10) The FDA requires that baby formula should have at least 1 mg of iron for every 100 calories. It’s because babies with inadequate iron intake can develop iron deficiency anemia. If left untreated, this anemia may lead to irreversible cognitive, learning, and functional development outcomes. (10) If an infant formula has less than the minimum iron requirement, the FDA requires manufacturers to add a label (in English) to indicate that iron supplementation may be necessary. (10) Many products included in this massive recall contain less than 1 mg of iron per 100 calories, yet none include the required label. (10) The following HiPP baby formulas were listed on the recall advisory: (10)

HiPP Dutch Combiotic Infant Milk Formula (Stage 1; 0-6 months) HiPP Dutch Combiotic Follow-on Milk Formula (Stage 2; 6+ months) HiPP Anti-Reflux Milk Formula (from birth) HiPP Comfort Milk Formula (from birth) HiPP German Combiotic Infant Milk Formula (Stage 1; 0-6 months) HiPP German Combiotic Follow-on Infant Milk Formula (Stage 2; 6+ months) HiPP UK Combiotic First Infant Milk Formula (Stage 1; 0-6 months) HiPP UK Combiotic Follow-on Infant Milk Formula (Stage 2; 6+ months) HiPP HA Germany Hypoallergenic Stage PRE Combiotic Infant Milk Formula (0-6 months) HiPP HA Germany Hypoallergenic Combiotic Infant Milk Formula (Stage 1; 6+ months) HiPP HA Germany Hypoallergenic Combiotic Follow-on Milk Formula (Stage 2; 6+ months)

Affected consumers are advised to stop using these infant formulas immediately. The FDA advisory also recommends disposing of these items safely. You can send a message to [email protected] if you have any questions. (10) However, despite the low iron content, these baby formulas may still be safe for your baby to drink. But make sure to consult your pediatrician to confirm whether these formulas are ideal for your baby. Your pediatrician may recommend a suitable iron supplement so your baby can still meet their iron requirements. All HiPP formulas are free from:

Soy Gluten Eggs Peanuts Added sugars Corn syrup Toxic chemicals Pesticides Herbicides Hormones Steroids Artificial preservatives Artificial flavors Artificial colors Other unnatural ingredients or additives

title: “Hipp Organic Formula Reviews Are These European Formulas Good For My Baby Motherhood Community” ShowToc: true date: “2022-12-01” author: “Joseph Molnar”
